Millions of euros have been allocated into Genoa’s superyacht infrastructure through a partnership between Amico & Co and Pesto Sea Group to attract more of the mega-rich to Genoa for visits or to use it as a year-round base for their yachts.

The recent investment follows a significant amount already spent by Genoa’s government on the Eastern Waterfront project and other projects to draw in superyacht owners and users.

Around 70% of the world’s superyacht fleet cruises in and around the Mediterranean, making it a global hotspot. This has also led many governments in surrounding regions to invest significantly in infrastructure to attract these wealthy visitors.

“Genoa has further strengthened its leadership by investing in urban transformation and new infrastructure for hosting and managing large yachts,” the partnership said in a statement.

Yacht owners, their captains, charter managers, crew members, and staff are all target users of the hub.

Its launch coincides with the newly operational Waterfront Marina, a large facility developed to cater for superyachts of 30 meters and up.

Following the large investment, Greece’s Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis announced plans to bring more marine tourism to the country in the coming years following the ongoing pandemic.

Marine tourism will be the “top priority” for the country, he told the Inter-Regional Forum event organised by the Greek Regional Tourism Council this month (April).
