Marine fuel demand across the Mediterranean is showing steady recovery heading into the peak yachting and commercial shipping season. Volumes of Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and Low Sulphur Marine Gas Oil (LSMGO) have been increasing as operators adjust to ongoing compliance with the Mediterranean Sulphur Emission Control Area (ECA) regulations.

Fuel availability remains robust at major ports, though some smaller harbors continue to face intermittent supply delays. Recent data indicates that VLSFO usage has stabilized around 37–40%, while LSMGO accounts for nearly 30% of total marine fuel sales in the region. This reflects a shift towards cleaner fuels in line with environmental regulations.

Alternative fuels are also seeing growing traction. Biofuel blends and LNG bunkering have increased in adoption as shipowners and yacht operators seek environmentally compliant and strategically flexible options ahead of the summer season.

Pricing trends have been moderate, with VLSFO premiums remaining largely stable, though some seasonal spikes are being observed in high-demand locations like the French Riviera, Balearics, and Greek Islands.

Operators are advised to plan bunker deliveries early to secure competitive pricing and ensure operational readiness.

The ECA implementation has prompted refiners to adjust output, particularly for ultra-low sulphur fuel oils (ULSFO), while supply chains are adapting to meet increased demand for compliant fuels across the Mediterranean. Collaboration with reliable bunker suppliers is critical to ensure fuel quality and availability.

Operators should also consider fuel logistics, changeover procedures, and storage capacity, particularly for vessels planning extended Mediterranean itineraries. Early coordination with suppliers helps avoid operational disruptions and supports regulatory compliance.
