In 2008, the Port of Bejaia welcomed 34.7 thousand passengers and 10.7 thousand vehicles. Since then, numbers have been on the rise as facilities have been improved in order to better serve passenger and cargo ships.

Algeria is currently preparing their port infrastructure for better service of container shipments. Globally, the rate of containerized shipments has reached 70%, while in Algeria the current rate is between 35% and 45%. One of the largest ports, Algiers, will have a maximum capacity of 6 million containers. After successfully building up the ports, the next step for Algeria will be to connect all of the country’s ports by rail and roadway, which will significantly contribute towards the growth of the maritime transport sector.
